Aegle marmelos correa or Bilwa is a tree indigenous to India having a rough bark and hard wood. It is a slow growing tree attaining a height of 30 to 40 feet in many years. Leaves are peculiarly arranged, three leaves being fixed to a petiole, like a trident.
The fresh leaf has an aromatic odour which comes out when slightly crushed in hand. The juice of the leaf is slightly bitter, soluble in water or alcohol. Its fruit is large round or oval berry, having a hard outer shell, sweet when ripe.
